GENERAL MEETING INFORMATION

Founded in 1996 by Dr. Robert C. Gallo, who co-discovered HIV as the cause of AIDS and developed the first HIV blood test, the Institute of Human Virology (IHV) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is a world-class center of excellence focusing on research and clinical care related to chronic viral diseases, most notably HIV/AIDS, and virally linked cancers.  IHV’s Annual International Meeting has become one of the most prestigious scientific gatherings focused on the very latest HIV/AIDS research and related discoveries in care and treatment.

September 11-13, 2008, Renaissance Harborplace Hotel, Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

GOALS

The IHV 11th Annual International Meeting will serve as a comprehensive forum to:

  • Promote Research, Development and Application
  • Exchange Information and Promote Education Among Professionals and
  • the Public
  • Promote the Development of Clinical Translations

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Summarize and evaluate progression and anti progression factors in patients with HIV documented infections
  • Outline new clinical developments in HIV treatment as they relate to available therapeutics in all medication classes
  • Formulate a hypotheses discussing replication control of the human retroviruses
  • Discuss new clinical evidence on HIV viral latency including progression and  manipulation
  • Identify clinical advances in the treatment of  the Hepatitis C virus
  • Recall and interpret early events associated with HIV Infection
  • Review the HIV therapeutic class of entry inhibitors
  • Discuss advances in proteomics in HIV infection and therapeutics

TARGET AUDIENCE

The meeting attracts an international audience of clinicians and researchers in infectious disease, internal medicine, microbiology, and retrovirology as well allied health professionals in disease prevention and public health.  A wide variety of practice settings and work situations will be represented.   The content will provide leading edge information required by HIV/AIDS healthcare professionals at the forefront of their fields.

The abstract receipt deadline is June 1, 2008 at 5:00 p.m., EST.  Late abstracts will not be accepted.

ABSTRACT REVIEW AND SUBMISSION PROCESS

The 11th Anniversary IHV International Meeting Abstract Review Committee (ARC) will review all submitted abstracts and select abstracts for either the oral or poster sessions.  The ARC expects that all abstracts selected for presentation will be presented by the authors and that submitted abstracts will not be withdrawn.  All accepted abstracts become the property of IHV and will be published in a CD-ROM distributed to conference participants.  Please do not submit an abstract if you are not prepared to travel to the meeting and present it in the form selected by ARC.

ELIGIBILITY

All researchers and clinicians engaged in relevant work are eligible to submit abstracts. Submitting an abstract does not register you for the Meeting. You must also register for the meeting. Meeting registration is available online at:

PRIOR PUBLICATION

Papers that have been accepted for publication or published prior to the abstract
submission deadline may be submitted provided that they meet the goals of the IHV Annual International Meeting.

REVIEW PROCESS

Abstracts will be peer-reviewed according to their relevance to Meeting session themes.

ABSTRACT PLACEMENT

The Abstract Review Committee will determine where abstracts will be
placed within the program.  All abstracts submitted will be considered for one
oral presentation or poster session presentation.

SCHOLARSHIPS

  • The 11th Anniversary IHV International Meeting will be offering a limited number of travel grants to postdoctoral fellows and students who wish to attend the meeting. The grants will be awarded based on a determination of the IHV Abstract Review Committee.

The travel grants are for reimbursement for meeting-related expenses including Meeting registration fee, lodging and travel. To be considered for such a grant, please make sure to check one of the two boxes (student or postdoctoral fellow) on the registration form for scholarship consideration.   

ORAL PRESENTATIONS

Oral presentations are formal, LCD/PowerPoint presentations averaging 20 minutes in length and followed by brief discussion/Q&A.

POSTER SESSION

The Poster Session allows for the review of an illustration of the abstract. At the designated time, authors must be present to informally discuss their work. Authors are requested to post and remove posters at designated times. The IHV Meeting poster session- is held in conjunction with/immediately adjacent to the Meeting reception and is well attended.

NOTIFICATION

Notification regarding acceptance or rejection of abstracts will be made via email.  Acceptance and non-acceptance letters will also be available, upon request. Scholarship acceptance and non-acceptance letters will also be sent at this time.

ACCEPTANCE OF PRESENTATION

All notified abstract presenters are required to accept their presentation as instructed in their notification email.

ABSTRACT PUBLICATION

All abstracts accepted for oral and poster presentation will be published in the IHV 11th Anniversary International Meeting CD-ROM offered to all participants at the time of the Meeting.

AMA PRA CATEGORY 1 CREDIT™

All oral abstract presentations will be sponsored by the University of Maryland School of Medicine for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.    Poster abstract presentations will not be sponsored for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.  All presenters of oral abstracts must agree to comply with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education Essentials and Standards for Commercial Standards for Commercial support, including disclosure of commercial relationships and resolution of identified conflicts of interest.

DISCLOSURE AND RESOLUTION OF COMMERCIAL RELATIONSHIPS
